An eighteenth century painting of two figures

Eighteenth-Century Europe

During the eighteenth century, France and Italy were the artistic centres of Europe. Many artworks from this time show a renewed fascination with classical antiquity. While others captured views of cities like Venice, highlighting the popularity of the Grand Tour* at that time.

Our collection includes a selection of important works from this period. Visit Francesco Guardi’s impressive history painting, Sophronia asking the Saracen King Aladine to Release the Christian Prisoners (pictured). Or check out Canaletto's dramatic early view of Venice – a favourite among our visitors.

We also have paintings by popular British artists, such as Joseph Wright of Derby. As well as English-American artist Benjamin West. These works depict historical and classical scenes, as well as portraiture.

*The Grand Tour was a cultural tour of Europe popular during the eighteenth century. Upper class young men who made the tour often bought artworks as souvenirs of their travels.
