A painting of two women and two men sat on chairs talking.

The Netherlands

We have a fantastic collection of Netherlandish art at the gallery. Works in the collection span the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and echo Hull’s historic trading and cultural links.

Among our paintings you'll find still life, landscape and portraiture. With subjects spanning history, religion and more. The sheer variety of subject matter shows how art flourished during the Dutch Golden Age.

Frans Hals’ Portrait of a Young Woman is the star painting of this collection. But there are plenty more highlights besides. They include: an early visual illusion that commemorates the life and death of an artist, a playful interior scene loaded with secret meaning (pictured above), and a calm rural landscape.
