Works on paper

We hold around 1,500 works on paper at the gallery – many from the nineteenth century.

Among them, we have small collections of artists' work. Such as sketches and watercolours by landscape artists Albert Goodwin and James Duffield Harding. As well as Italian and Alpine scenes by Richard Henry Wright. We also hold many drawings and prints by Welsh artist Frank Brangwyn.

The collection contains important works by several modern artists. Including Paul Nash, John Nash, John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Eric Ravilious and Edward Burra.

Highlights include: The Tangled Skein by Frederick Sandys, landscapes by John Sell Cotman, Peter De Wint and Alexander Cozens, a striking portrait by John Singer Sargent, and Peasants with Sheep by Samuel Palmer.
